Dr. Comfort Awotwi Pratt, Associate Professor in the College of Education, has been the Adviser of Chapter Alpha Phi since 2004. During this period, the Chapter has distinguished itself as one of the best in the nation, with a total of thirty-two national awards and recognitions. Dr. Pratt has also achieved individual recognitions including three Minaya Álvar Fáñez Awards for Outstanding Adviser of the Year, a José Martel Award for Most Outstanding Adviser over a five year period, and an induction into the Order of the Discoverers recognizing her outstanding service in the fields of Hispanic scholarship and the teaching of Spanish. In 2013, she was elected National Vice President of the Southwest responsible for eight states including Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. She has also served as the Chair of the Sigma Delta Pi Graduate Research Competition since the grant was established in 2008. She was also named the Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese in 2013. Chapter Alpha Phi’s dynamism has had a significant impact on the Lubbock community, and Dr. Pratt was recognized by Texas Tech University Student Organizations as Outstanding Adviser of the Year in 2013.

For these accomplishments, Dr. Alice White, former senior administrator of Texas Tech University, established a $10,000.00 Endowment for Chapter Alpha Phi in honor of Dr. Pratt in 2012. The Dr. Comfort Awotwi Pratt Endowed Study Abroad Scholarship will be awarded annually to members of Chapter Alpha Phi of Sigma Delta Pi who have participated actively in the activities and events of the organization for at least two academic years to help fund a study abroad experience in Spain or Latin America. The scholarship will be funded with proceeds of the $10,000.00 Endowment established in perpetuity by Dr. Alice White for Sigma Delta Pi in honor of Dr. Comfort Pratt in 2012. The scholarship will be awarded in perpetuity. When Dr. Comfort Pratt leaves Texas Tech University, Sigma Delta Pi will continue to award the scholarship using the same name and the same criteria in perpetuity.
