Local

Dr. Harley Oberhelman Outstanding Research Award - This award was established by Chapter Alpha Phi of Sigma Delta Pi in 2018 in memory of Dr. Oberhelman's son, Dr. David Oberhelman (1965-2018) with a generous donation by Dr. Paulina Jacobo, honorary member of Sigma Delta Pi, and her husband Mr. Robin Green. It will be awarded for the most outstanding peer-reviewed publication of the academic year by a student member or an honorary member of Chapter Alpha Phi who has participated actively in the activities of the Chapter throughout the academic year. The winner will receive a plaque and a $100.00 cash award. Nominations are due on April 20. See Dr. Harley Oberelman Outstandingn Research Award Information for details. Dr. Comfort Awotwi Pratt Endowed Study Abroad Scholarship - Members of Chapter Alpha Phi of Sigma Delta Pi may apply for a scholarship to travel abroad to Spain or Latin America in order to study Spanish. This award is funded with an endowment established in honor of the chapter adviser, Dr. Comfort Pratt, by Dr. Alice White, honorary member of Sigma Delta Pi. Students who are not already members of Chapter Alpha Phi but are participating in the Study Abroad for Educators in Salamanca, Spain program are also eligible to apply. The application is due on April 15.

 

Scottie Mae Tucker Spanish or Bilingual Teacher of the Year Award:

Chapter Alpha Phi of Sigma Delta Pi established the Spanish or Bilingual Teacher of the Year Award in honor of Dr. Scottie Mae Tucker, former Spanish professor at Texas Tech University, to recognize outstanding K-12 teachers. The award was established with a generous donation by Dr. Paulina Jacobo, honorary member of Sigma Delta Pi. The competition is open to all Spanish, Bilingual Education (Spanish, not ESL), or Dual Language teachers in the Lubbock, Lubbock-Cooper, Frenship, and Spur Independent School Districts. The winner of the competition receives the Scottie Mae Tucker Award in the form of a plaque and a $100 cash prize. See Scottie Mae Tucker Award Information for details of the award. Click on Nomination Form to access the nomination form. Nominations will be screened for eligibility by the adviser and then submitted to the Scholarships and Awards Committee for review. Nominations are due on March 15.

Dr. Alice White Outstanding Service Award - For members who have made outstanding service contributions to Chapter Alpha Phi. The selection will be made by the adviser. If the adviser is a nominee, the selection will be made by the Scholarships and Awards Committee. See Dr. Alice White Outstanding Service Award Information for details.

National

Graduate Research Grants – Graduate students who are active members of Sigma Delta Pi may apply for grants to support travel abroad to Spain or Spanish America for the sole purpose of research related to Hispanic Studies. Undergraduate Study Abroad Scholarships – Undergraduate students who are active members of Sigma Delta Pi may apply for a variety of study abroad scholarships to support travel abroad to Spain or Spanish America. See https://sigmadeltapi.org/2019/01/07/sigma-delta-pis-undergraduate-study-abroad-awards-program/ for details. The application is due on February 1.

 

Premio Gabriela Mistral – Granted to an outstanding graduate or undergraduate student of Spanish who is an active member of Sigma Delta Pi and who has demonstrated noteworthy involvement and initiative in his/her chapter. Any active chapter may nominate one student per year for the award and shall send the nomination together with supporting documentation, including at least two letters of recommendation and a current transcript, to the Executive Director (delmastromp@cofc.edu). Winners of the award will receive a certificate.

 

Premio Mario Vargas Llosa – Granted yearly to one undergraduate Spanish major or minor who is a member of Sigma Delta Pi and who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all upper-division courses completed and exemplary involvement in extra-curricular activities related to Spanish. This is a joint award of Sigma Delta Pi and the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

 

Chapter Awards

 

Capítulos de Honor y Mérito – 10-15 chapters are recognized annually for their outstanding activities.

 

Chapter Project Grants – Chapters may apply for a grant to support a chapter project that complements the mission of Sigma Delta Pi during the upcoming academic year.

 

Premio Frida Kahlo- This award is presented yearly to a chapter for its outstanding website. To be considered for this honor, chapters must e-mail their current website addresses to the Executive Director (delmastromp@cofc.edu) by December 1 of the year in question. Websites are judged on the basis of information provided, navigability, appearance, innovation and current maintenance. The selected chapter will receive a handsome plaque.

 

Premio Ignacio y Sophie Galbis – Ignacio, with the help of his wife Sophie, served more than 20 years as Executive Secretary-Treasurer (1977-1997). The award is granted yearly to a chapter for its exemplary activities representing the highest ideals of the Society.

 

Premio Octavio Paz – Awarded to those chapters that maintain Honor Chapter status for a complete triennium.

​

 

Premio Fénix – This award recognizes one chapter for a year of extraordinary and exemplary activity as compared to the previous year(s).

​
